How to Prepare for a Hurricane the Right Way!
Living in hurricane danger areas like Florida, it is essential for people to know how to protect themselves and their property. In this blog post, we will be discussing the steps you need to take to increase your chances of survival and keep your property safe. Before I begin, a hurricane is no joke, when you hear about a potential hurricane coming your way take safety precautions quickly. Many times, families wait until the last second to take precautions, when they go to the grocery store all the food is bought out and batteries are all sold, it’s too late.
Step #1: Create a Plan
Perhaps the most important step to preparing for a hurricane disaster is to make a plan. In case of an evacuation make sure to turn off all utilities and gather family members to a safer location. Before leaving your home make sure to secure your property with proper shutters. There are five common types of shutters that you can use to help improve the chances that your property survives this disaster.
Step #2: Send a family member to the grocery store and have the rest secure the exterior of your home
It is important to hand members of your household tasks because every minute counts when preparing for an emergency. Have a family member head to the store to get non-perishable goods, batteries, generators, candles, flashlights, water, and gasoline. While there are still some left at the house, begin securing your property with the proper equipment. If you are using hurricane storm panels, make sure to start as soon as possible as they tend to take the longest to deploy, taking over a few hours. If you want to cut the time off of deploying your property then I suggest accordion shutters. Accordion shutters are very easy to deploy taking seconds for each window and door by using a railing system and locking with a key shut.
Step #3: Bring all potential airborne objects inside
Scout out around your house looking for objects like chairs, garbage cans, furniture, potted flowers, and bring them into your garage or house. This will prevent airborne objects from breaking windows or through entryways that could potentially flood your house.
Step #4: Move all vehicles in a safe area
Make sure to move your cars out from under trees, power lines, or any other structure that could potentially fall onto them.
Step #5: Fill up gas tanks, charge electronics, test out generators
Step #6: Either purchase an emergency kit or prepare one yourself gathering items from around your house that would help. It is important to have an emergency kit because, during emergencies, situations can get hectic.
Step#7: Find a shelter room
Locate a central room in the house that is away from all windows. This way if a disaster occurs, broken windows and airborne objects won’t harm you.
With all these steps in mind, you are ahead of the game. One of the most important steps is to make sure to act fast because people are going to panic and take all groceries and batteries that your family will need. Finding quality equipment to secure your house is also important.
